A Journey to Kanazawa, Shirakawago, Kyoto
Tokyo > Kanazawa > Shirakawago > Kyoto
The essence of a great journey lies in the way you connect the destinations, making the travel itself as captivating as the places you visit. We invite you to experience Japan this way, with a journey that features both stunning locales and memorable travel methods. This tour incorporates private car drives through scenic mountain valleys and rides on local express trains, offering breathtaking views of the countryside. Highlighting the soul of Japan, this itinerary features two unforgettable destinations: the artisan city of Kanazawa and the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site of Shirakawa-go.
Kanazawa, a jewel box of traditional Japan that escaped wartime damage, is just a three-hour Shinkansen ride west of Tokyo. Famed globally for its exquisite gold leaf, delicate ceramics, and intricate textiles, the city invites you to step into a bygone era. You can wander the beautifully preserved Geisha district of Higashi-chaya, find serenity in Kenrokuen, counted among Japan’s three most beautiful landscape gardens, and partake in an authentic, tranquil tea ceremony.
Leaving Kanazawa, your journey winds through the deep mountainous region to the remote Gifu prefecture. Here, you will discover the small village of Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO site known for its unique, soaring gassho-zukuri (thatched, “praying hands” roof) farmhouses. Be sure to hike to the hilltop for an absolutely breathtaking panoramic view of the entire village. Your overnight stay is in nearby Takayama, a historic Edo-era town, where you can indulge in local cuisine and sake. For an extra touch of relaxation, a stay at a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan) with a soothing hot spring experience is available as an optional upgrade.
Next morning, board the Hida Express for a scenic train journey, descending alongside the Hida valley before you arrive in the dignified ancient capital of Kyoto. A private guided tour will introduce you to the city’s timeless temples, geisha quarters, and exquisite gardens. You may also want to extend your stay in Kyoto, continuing to another region of Japan, or simply arranging for your return to Tokyo—all options can be seamlessly arranged to complete your perfect cultural deep dive.
